No hot water usually means the water heater has lost its power, gas or flame, or the boiler that heats it has stopped. Check whether it's every faucet, then the breaker, pilot or error code. If it doesn't come back, Cornerstone Plumbing in Milford repairs and replaces water heaters: (508) 361-9450.
Sudden loss of hot water usually comes down to the energy supply: a tripped breaker or failed heating element on an electric heater, a pilot or burner that has gone out on a gas one, or a boiler that has stopped. Less often it's a failed thermostat or valve. Cornerstone Plumbing finds the cause before replacing anything.
How do I reset my hot water heater?
Many electric water heaters have a red reset button behind a cover panel, and gas heaters are relit using the steps on their label. A heater that needs resetting more than once has a fault, such as a bad element, thermostat or thermocouple, and resetting it again won't fix it. Cornerstone Plumbing can repair it safely.
Why is there no hot water when the heating still works?
If your boiler also makes your hot water, through an indirect tank or a coil inside the boiler, the heat can work while the hot water doesn't. Common causes are a failed zone valve, circulator or control on the indirect tank, or a scaled-up coil or mixing valve. Cornerstone Plumbing services both oil and gas boilers.
Should I repair or replace a water heater with no hot water?
A tank under about eight years old with a failed part, such as an element, thermostat or gas valve, is usually worth repairing. An older tank, or one that is also leaking or rusting, is usually better replaced. Cornerstone Plumbing installs tank, tankless and heat pump water heaters and explains both options before any work.
